IT Chapter Two has arrived in theaters and those who have seen the sequel know there is much to discuss. Virtually any sequel has some level of expectations placed upon it, but this is genuinely about as big as things get. While we'll surely be debating the degree to which director Andy Muschietti and writer Gary Dauberman succeeded overall, the screenwriter has opened up about one of the most surprising elements of the movie.
Warning: spoilers ahead for IT Chapter TwoRichie Tozier, as portrayed by Finn Wolfhard in the first movie and Bill Hader as the adult version of the character this time around, is known for his foul mouth and quippy nature. He's the comic relief. He steals the show. But as anyone who has seen the sequel knows, he's also holding onto a big secret. Richie is gay. Not only that, but he was in love with his excellent pal Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer/James Ransone).
While not explicitly stated in a heavy-handed way, the movie goes out of its way to make this clear. It adds a whole new dimension to the character and provides a lot of depth and complexity. This was present in Stephen King's original novel but more subtly. Gary Dauberman, in a recent interview, explained why they decided to handle things a bit more head-on. Here's what he had to say about it.
IT Chapter Two is Perfect Surprise Horror Movie:-
IT Chapter Two, at long last, has arrived in theaters. Horror fans have been waiting two years to see how director Andy Muschietti would conclude this ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's beloved horror novel, and the time has finally come. While the sequel contains many surprises, plenty of Pennywise and a whole bunch of The Losers Club, there is also a pretty solid cameo appearance that is extremely fitting and very fun.
Warning: minor spoilers ahead for IT Chapter Two. Those who haven't seen the movie yet may want to turn back now. Otherwise, read on at your own risk. About halfway through the film, after the adult Losers have returned to Derry, Maine and realized that they must fight Pennywise once again to stop this madness once and for all, they're all sent on a quest to gather tokens from the past. This leads Bill (James McAvoy) to an antique shop in the heart of his hometown, where he comes across an old friend. That old friend being his bike, Silver.
With that, Bill feels compelled to purchase back his good old form of transportation, and he must haggle with the shop owner to do so. And that shop owner is played by none other than the horror master himself, Stephen King. The scene that follows offers a bit of levity, as King is aware of who Bill is, as he's become a famous author in the years since the events of the first movie. The shop owner even has a copy of one of Bill's books on the counter. Bill offers to sign it, but the shopkeep declines, given that he didn't like the ending. Bill then hands over the $300 requested for the bike and that's that.
It Chapter 2 Review
IT Chapter Two has flickers of fright but is ultimately undone by an arduous runtime. Director Andy Muschietti went a tad long in the original, but successfully captured the intimacy of children facing a terrifying evil. Clocking in at a brain-numbing two hours and fifty-minutes, his sequel tries to explore every corner and ends up lacking cohesion. The scares that work are overpowered by big-budget CGI theatrics. It Chapter Two aims for a blockbuster horror epic, but unfortunately misses the mark.
Twenty-seven years after the Losers Club defeated the child-eating clown Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård), the town of Derry is once again under siege. Mike (Isaiah Mustafa) reaches out to his childhood friends to fulfill a sacred pact. Bill (James McAvoy) is a famous writer whose stutter returns when he receives the call. Beverly (Jessica Chastain) has not escaped the abuse that shattered her innocence. Ben (Jay Ryan) isn't the fat kid anymore. Richie (Bill Hader) vomits before his stand-up act. Eddie (James Ransome) refuses to believe "It" has returned. Stanley (Andy Bean) fully understands what lies ahead.
The Losers Club struggles to remember the events of their youth. Mike, the only one who remained in Derry, has a theory why. He's also figured out a way to kill the clown for good. The others are initially hesitant, but soon realize they cannot escape their destiny. They must face Pennywise individually, and then as a team. "It" will use their darkest fears to stop them. Pennywise has a score to settle in blood.
